The Impact Mechanism of System Function Overload on Job Crafting: An Integrative Literature Review Based on Energy Depletion and Mindfulness

Digital transformation has advanced rapidly across global industries, yet enterprise information systems frequently suffer from redundant functions and cumbersome operations. The resulting system feature overload has become a major source of workplace strain among employees. Such technological burdens fail to deliver the intended efficiency support, instead draining employees’ cognitive and psychological resources. This loss of resources suppresses voluntary job crafting, creating a contradictory reality where greater technological input restrains staff proactive behaviors. To unpack the multi-layered transmission channels of this contradiction, this study integrates the JD-R model and COR theory for analysis. A systematic literature review is adopted, covering 52 core papers retrieved from Web of Science, Scopus, EBSCO host and CNKI databases. Analysis outcomes reveal that system feature overload exerts a robust negative predictive impact on employee job crafting, and this correlation carries non-linear traits while varying across cultural contexts. Energy depletion acts as a vital mediator separating the two constructs, with three distinct transmission paths: depletion of cognitive, emotional and volitional resources respectively. Mindfulness, an inherent psychological resource of individuals, could mitigate the adverse impacts brought by energy depletion on job crafting, and weaken the indirect harmful effects triggered by system overload. At the end of this paper, drawbacks embedded within existing measurement scales and empirical research frameworks are discussed, alongside targeted suggestions for follow-up academic exploration.
