A Qualitative Study on the Construct of Employee Craftsmanship Behavior

Cultivating employee craftsmanship spirit is a core lever for supporting supply-side reforms and responding to the upgrading of consumer demand, as well as a key pathway to bridging the gap in the supply of high-quality products and services. However, existing research on craftsmanship spirit organizational behavior largely remains at the level of macro conceptual interpretation, with limited exploration at the individual employee behavior dimension. Building on the preliminary exploration of the initial construct, this study updates the literature in the field. The study defines a six-dimensional structure of employee craftsmanship behavior that aligns with Chinese contextual practices, comprising the following dimensions: passion for work, persistence in one’s role, dedication, continuous improvement, sense of mission, and adherence to professional ethics. The revised dimensional framework addresses issues in the initial framework, such as conceptual overlap, vague boundaries, and inadequate contextual relevance. It offers clearer boundaries and better reflects the characteristics of employee craftsmanship behavior across industries in the Chinese context, thereby laying a solid conceptual foundation for future empirical research on craftsmanship spirit.
